I miss the 80’s. A time where you could go to spend all day at the theaters and see a puppet monster wearing a trench coat mimic flash a young bartender, Dan Aykroyd get a blowjob from a ghost, and Robert De Niro... well, you will just have to watch Once Upon a Time in America to see what he did. Twice.

What a weekend. June of 1984 was a wild weekend to spend at the movies and Michael and I spent all day there. And I mean ALL DAY (just check Once Upon a Time in America’s runtime).

Grab some popcorn and join us at the movies and you be the judge. Did the people get it right? Does Ghostbusters deserve its place in history? Or, when asked who we’re going to call, should we instead be calling back, “Gizmo!”

Once Upon a Time in America

Gremlins

‍I came into this ready for an artsy horror film and somehow Green Room both dashed those expectations and didn’t disappoint all at the same time. A lofty feat for such a modest film.

‍Our four protagonists, optimistic and irresponsible, awaken in their van after it has come to an unplanned stop in a field. Their naive optimism eventually delivers them into a far more dangerous situation. Taking their hands off of the wheel they coast into a nazi punk venue hoping to make a few dollars to buy gas to get home.

‍And as things look worse and worse for our heroic rockers, we can’t help but wonder how many compromises will they have to make to escape this prison intact? And is it even possible.

‍Patrick Stewart’s, Darcy, the calm strategist, inspires more fear than any monster or scissor-handed dream invader. His supreme composure shows just how much more prepared he is for this scenario than the band could have ever been.

‍This is a super smart, small film that was likely overshadowed by the likes of Captain America and Jungle Boom. Highly recommend.

‍Is it punk rock to be kind? James Gunn asks us to believe that a man from a distant planet who thought that he was sent here to be humanity’s benevolent Boy Scout can also be a rebel.

‍Whether he is breaking the sound barrier, summoning his unhinged pooch, or saving puny earthlings from certain doom, Superman always wears a smirk that says “Yes, it’s a thankless job but you people are worth it.”

‍And it shows in his love for Lois. As always, she is the stand-in for humanity. Thankful for what he does, but doesn’t fully trust his process. I mean, how can you? We just met him and he could crush us like bugs. So what is there to stop him from doing it? Which is why, when he makes a unilateral decision that dramatically shifts the balance of global power she (rightly) has some tough questions for him.

‍Some reviewers think that superhero fatigue has set in. Others bemoan all of the homework that we need to do to stay on top of what Captain Marvel or Ant Man is up to now. There is nothing tiresome about watching Superman emerge from a cloud of debris from a fallen skyscraper ready to take on whatever humanity can throw at him next. Maybe the real thing rebellious about Superman is that it’s here to do the heavy lifting for us. DC has flown in to steal our hearts from their rivals at the MCU. Superman scoops you up and takes you out to a really good time at the movies and expects nothing in return. But he wouldn’t be bothered if you bought a Krypton popcorn bucket.
